Life in his Hands

LIFE IN HIS HANDS

by Susan Wyndham

If I am ambling around a book store looking for a good read, at first glance, a story about a neurosurgeon and his patient would probably not seemingly be the rivetting material I would be looking for.

At first glance this may be the case, but this book Life in His Hands is such a extraordinary story, with its amazing characters and its twists and turns, you will be glued to the end.

This is a true story.

The stars are a young musician, Aaron McMillan, who possesses a wisdom and talent way beyond his years.  In fact, his longer life may have offered him a rise to the top of the musical world that he so deserved.

The other star is the ‘celebrated and controversial’ neurosurgeon Dr Charlie Teo who is the kind of man who takes on life’s challenges in work and in play, that others would not even contemplate.

One fateful day Aaron and Charlie meet and forge a bond way beyond the usual Dr and patient relationship

Susan Wyndham has crafted the journey between these two men which is a story of true spirit.

Whilst the subject matter, Aarons struggle with a brain tumour and Charlies persistence in operating when there seems no hope, may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but this book grabs you by the collar and takes you on an amazing journey of courage, determination, belief and spirit that has you spell bound until the end.

I would thoroughly recommend this incredibly inspiring story because we need to know that lives cut short by fate can be more than 'huge' in the living.

We follow Aaron's life with his commitment and passion and Charlie with his exceptional medical skills willing success at every operation, both these men living their lives with purpose no matter what the length.

The people, the twists and turns and the true events make it impossible to put down.  We need to know, we feel compassion and we hope there is a good outcome.

The sadness is that Aaron is no longer with us, but his story intertwined with Charlie’s, helps us to see a beauty and inner strength that is palpable in these all consuming circumstances.

This book shows us that battles can be your life, and they are worth living.
