Hold It Sister

Hold It Sister

“Oops ...don’t make me laugh”

Ever been too afraid to sneeze in company, or scared to break out in a fit of the giggles in fear that you may create some unwanted leakage?

Maybe you have ‘leakage’ when you run or exercise.

Many of you are nodding right now - so how long have you been putting up with this problem girls????

I was one of those ‘nodders’ too, therefore I can totally empathise with you and so can an estimated 40% of women who live with bladder control problems. I was staggered to learn that 50% of women suffer from pelvic organ prolapse. Incredible isn’t it!

Did you know that it in many cases, this is due to weak or uncoordinated pelvic floor muscles?  The good news is - this problem can be rectified.

I guess most of us don’t even think about our pelvic floor until something goes wrong. When you think of it, how much do we even know about this part of our body and how it functions?

I for one didn’t know much about it until I read the book ‘My Pelvic Floor’ by leading pelvic floor physiotherapist, Lecturer and Senior Teaching Fellow at Bond University Queensland, Mary O’Dwyer. Her book is remarkable, it truly changed my life.

Mary is known for her workshops in the United Kingdom as the ‘Down Under Expert’ from Down Under!

It’s a bible for a leak-free life!

Mary contacted me again recently and offered me the opportunity to review her new book -

‘Hold It Sister’- the confident guide to a leak-free life.

This book is a must read page turner.

It’s hard to imagine that a book about pelvic control can be so fascinating, but it is. This book is easy to read, well illustrated and is a practical guide to regaining control and keeping it.

There are a number of interesting case studies in the book highlighting common complaints that many of us can relate to. It also explains how each of the women regained healthy pelvic floor control.

Fitness for our love muscles!

Mary’s book offers us four strategies to improve orgasm.

From my own personal experience girls....trust me, it works!

‘Hold It Sister’ is a compelling new vision for female pelvic health – all women will benefit from the information and the expert guidance this book delivers.

Hold it Sister will help you:

  • Understand how your pelvic floor works
  • Find, control and train your pelvic floor muscles (Mary’s new 3 step program)
  • Recover control after childbirth or pelvic surgery
  • Gain improved sexual sensation and orgasm
  • Adopt the 5  protective pelvic floor habits
  • Learn the 5 harmful habits to avoid
  • Empower your daughters  with correct  pelvic health information
  • Understand how to safely exercise and prevent pelvic floor damage

I was particularly interested in the book’s section on ‘The Older Pelvic Floor’ and was intrigued to learn that women in their 70’s and 80’s can learn to locate and strengthen their pelvic floor muscles, resulting in improved bladder and core postural control.

No reading on the toilet girls!

In fact, the way we even sit on the toilet matters.

Mary says, “Before Thomas Crapper introduced the toilet to the nineteenth century London, squatting was the commonly used position to empty the bowel. Squatting places your bowel in a better position to fully empty”.

“If your habit is to slump and strain, you are at risk of aggravating bladder incontinence, rectal and/or vaginal prolapse”. We can certainly do without that!

‘Hold It Sister’ will provide you with simple instructions and a diagram to correct your ‘toilet sitting’ position. This information has benefited me greatly.

Meeting Mary

I met Mary in Sydney during the launch of her first book, ‘My Pelvic Flaw’ and I was captivated by her passion and determination to educate all women about our very important pelvic floor health and to enlighten and empower us in our management of relevant problems.

Her 30 years clinical and teaching experience on effective pelvic floor training will greatly benefit all of us who read her book and follow her professional advice.

Mary has helped women of all ages free themselves of those “unmentional” pads in their purses. Some have cancelled scheduled surgery and others even regained their orgasm!

Hold It Sister
is full of practical advice, case studies and easy-to-follow exercises with photos, to safely train floor and core muscles at home or at the gym.

Workshops

Mary O’Dwyer is accredited with Fitness Australia and the Australian Physiotherapy Association. She regularly presents at workshops and seminars across Australia and overseas. She is currently participating in the International Motherhood study with researchers Dr Angela Huntsman and Jodie Hedley-Ward. She is also a supporter of the Fistula Foundation in Ethiopia and is passionate about empowering women of all ages, sizes, cultures and religion.

I think it would be a great idea to attend the workshops to reinforce what we have already learnt from the book.

“Hold It Sister” is a book for women of all ages and we all should educate our daughters and granddaughters to protect their pelvic floor functions with the easy-to-follow exercises (with photos), to safely train floor and core muscles at home or at the gym.

They will thank us as they age.
