Wise Women Blog Lana

Hi and Welcome
to
Wise Womens World

It’s great to have you stop by, thanks for visiting. I hope you enjoy my weekly blog and don’t forget to leave me a message at the end".

Australia has a saintMary McKillop. The Aussies were certainly PROUD and LOUD in Rome for the canonisation.

It’s amazing how a celebration like this can bring people so much closer together resulting in a feeling of patriotism that is palpable.

Events like these, tend to bring the humanitarian aspect out in all of us and stirs some of us into wondering  about ‘our life’s path’. Why are we here? What do we need to learn? How can we be of service?

These are life’s fundamental questions...

At this time in my life, I am experiencing immense changes, such as menopause and a strong desire to re-energise my body, mind and spirit and also to uncover the mystery question, “why am I here?”

I have studied a number of books lately about this subject and have spoken with a few knowledgeable people and I think I am getting closer to understanding myself better and what I am here to do – Better late than never I say!

Do you have a story you would like to share about finding you ‘pathway in life’?

MY WEEK

Where does the week go? In fact, where did the year go?

I was visiting my local shopping mall last week and to my horror, I noticed Christmas decorations everyway...it can’t be that time of the year already... surely?

It just seemed like yesterday that I was taking down the Christmas tree and now it's nearly time to put it up again!

The year goes by so fast that I think I will put the tree up and just leave it up! Problem solved.

As the festive season promotions have been thrust upon me, I decided to prepare myself by dropping a few kilos before the ‘eat-fest’ begins (the usual lead up to Xmas Day).

This week I’ve tortured myself with a diet of steamed vegetables, broth, fruit and small amounts of lean meat. I also limited the bread, caffeine and ramped up the gym work and forced myself to drink more water and eliminate wine. Sounds good doesn’t it?

I should be looking and feeling great shouldn’t I?...

"All Pain No Gain"

The reality is; I woke up this morning in a foetal position, having dreamt about eating chocolate frogs by the dozens. I had a raging headache and I looked like I had been on an ‘all-nighter’.

My muscles were sore and stiff from too much gym work and I could hardly stand up straight. My husband took one look at me and said, “Oh, you need to go back to bed.” “Great idea”, I thought

I don’t understand it, when I was young I would bounce out of bed after such a virtuous week, but now at 55, my body is screaming out, “give me toxins, I need toxins!”

Today, the decision is a hard one to make, stick to my healthy eating plan or react to my body’s rebellion – a bowl of vegetable soup for lunch washed down with a cold H2o or a plate of fried fish and chips washed down with a chilled, crisp Semillon? Mmm...

How Old Are You Really?

My 92 year old mum

Here is an online test that you can take to test your cellular age (if you are game)  -

I took the test and was delighted but very surprised, that I my cellular age is 48.5 years and I am expected to live until 95 (if I continue to follow a healthy lifestyle).

The results might be a bit shady for me though, as I answered the questions on what I did this week (when I was being extremely good).

Maybe I should do one on an average week or perhaps I should just keep my head in the sand.

Dab Buettner, (author of ‘The Blue Zones’ and the cellular ageing test) spent 4 years studying communities around the world where inhabitants live beyond 100 in alarming numbers, and he found common threads and learned from this.

This is what he does to reduce cellular age – He eats less (eating to 80% full is best), only does jobs he’s passionate about (knowing your purpose is key), walking (moving mindlessly and incidentally is best he says).

He eats a mostly plant based diet, he has spiritual faith, chooses friends that live according to values that matter to him, he withdraws regularly to reflect and rest and finally my favourite bit – he enjoys a glass of red wine or two (but not too much).

But, he says, the research also produced some unexpected findings.

"One of the idiosyncrasies we discovered is that people who eat nuts four to five times a week, 2 ounces at a time, tend to live two to three years longer than people who don't eat nuts. That was a big surprise for us," Buettner says.

I think we should all be chewing on more nuts!

Congratulations to Gigi as she is an expectant grandmother! I know she is over the moon.

Congratulations also Gigi for doing your bit to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Research by trekking 19 tough klms through the bush tracks of the city. Great effort!

Gigi also talks about the pain of watching a loved one suffer. We all go through this at sometime during our life and it is devastating. It’s extremely helpful to discuss your pain with others to lighten the load. It sure helps with our mental well-being.

I hope all women open up to others about their own feelings, as Gigi and I want to see women helping women – it’s the wise women’s way!
