How many years ago? Ten, twenty! How long ago was it that the idea of travelling by air seemed glamorous and exciting. Others were jealous as you set off in this metal cylinder.
You went into exotic airports and were ushered on board planes like you were worthy to be flown. Space around your seat was not discussed because there was space!!!! Even though you travelled for incredibly long hours, you most likely did not die of DVT!
And you could only get a job as an airhostess if you were gorgeous and carried yourself with the deportment of a fashion model. Almost every girl wanted to be an airhostess - they were something more than a glorified waitress.
And good heavens, the food was quite reasonable and served with metal and cloth. And there was actual service and free alcohol.
Yes! they were the good old days! What happened?
Why do we now find air travel so tedious? Why, when billions of dollars to upgrade and modernise this mode of travel, have we been left to wonder why our enjoyment has been extinguished.
OK, OK, you business class travellers – the service has improved for you, but the bulk of the paying customers now sit in cramped uncomfortable conditions and hurled foods sealed in plastic containers by casual waiting staff.
It just seems the giant step forwards in the aviation field hasn’t really generated an increase in our excitement in the whole experience.
But I must admit, there is that tiny thrill as the plane lifts off and you are headed towards your destination where a whole lot of adventure awaits you.
But air travel, I think ‘exotic’ has dropped off the description and replaced with mundane and uncomfortable.
I am about to travel on Emirates to Europe so I will be waving my critical eye over this carrier……..will let you know what I think of them!!
